Sunday Times, 25.08.02
Hugh Canning

Kaufmann's Schubert was more remarkable still. He takes more risks than any other tenor I have heard in this music, and they don't always pay off in purely vocal terms, but the communicative dividends are immense. Although texts were only sporadically provided - demand for seats far outstripped the management's expectations - anyone with reasonable German could have followed every word of Wilhelm Muller's poems, so crisp and sentient was Kaufmann's diction. And his grasp of the psychology of the lovelorn protagonist of Schubert's first great song cycle was complete. This was Schubert lieder-singing.

Edimburgo 2003

Tim Ashley

German tenor Jonas Kaufmann became the international festival's star two years ago when he sang Schumann and Strauss at the Queen's Hall. Since then, Edinburgh has effectively become the platform for his finest work in the UK - a place where he can develop his career and where we can watch his remarkable progress.

This year found him and his regular accompanist, Helmut Deutsch, tackling Schubert's gruelling Winterreise, a work that Kaufmann has avoided until recently, claiming he was unwilling to sing it until he felt absolutely ready. Now, it would seem, he is very much ready, though his performance comes as something of a jolt, for this is Winterreise as we rarely hear it nowadays. Kaufmann treats it very much as a high Romantic statement rather than opting for the expressionist emoting that many interpreters prefer. His isolated traveller stands very much in the aesthetic tradition that links Byron with Wagner - haunted, self-lacerating, craving oblivion and metaphysically rebellious.

Kaufmann consequently thinks his way through the work in extended paragraphs, conveying its emotional agony more through the lyrical unfolding of the vocal line rather than through ironic inflections of the text. His voice has become weightier of late, and his dark tone, poised somewhere between tenor and baritone, and ringing with astonishing fullness in its upper registers, has an uncanny aptness throughout. This is already a remarkable interpretation that may grow even more profound with time.

EIF Review
Pat Napier

Dressed entirely in appropriate black, with the sunlight flooding into the Queen's Hall, Jonas Kauffmann settled into Winterreise in light mood suppported by the piano.

Then, in Gute Nacht's 5th verse - the turning point - both voice and piano set the developing, sombre, introspective tone by emphasising the traveller's inevitable expulsion, underscored by the barking of the village dogs.

Hemut Deutsch's piano accompaniment was very vivid in expressing tiny details such as the energetice barking of the village dogs, or the gusty, swirling wind swinging the Weather vane, which helped to illuminate the effect of the singer's tiny but critical pause before the last two lines of the Weather vane, where Kaufmann turns the mood around by asking "What do they care for my grief?"

At the critical point in each verse, Kaufmann's achingly beautiful lyrical verse turns to an increasingly darker descent into bitterer and bitterer loneliness paralled by meditations on the winter landscape. But Kaufmann's traveller is still a young man not yet ready to succumb and staving off death's sure grip until the very last moment. It was a deeply moving experience, ending in that always-magical, breath-held, long, long pause.

The Scotsman, 18. August 2003
James Allen

WHETHER or not Schubert’s Winterreise is the greatest song cycle, it is certainly the one by which many a tenor is judged. Singers return again and again to this work in their careers and tenor Jonas Kaufmann will doubtless wish to probe it more deeply and build upon the distinctive imprint he put on the work in this recital.

Kaufmann’s voice has grown in the last year. Rich, baritonal depths have developed and his middle range is more nuanced. Though it occasionally needed more support, his Romantic, rather than expressionistic, interpretation of the work was, overall, technically well catered for.

There was a sense, in Kaufmann’s performance, of oscillating more and more widely around an unbearable melancholic gloom before collapsing with exhaustion, rather than progressing linearly through the work. It was as if bad thoughts kept bouncing back at him, hindering forward progress and gnawing away at his soul.

I liked the way he reined in his voice to suggest the wintriness of the heart and pianist Helmut Deutsch’s handling of nature and the elements in the accompaniment. There is some way to go before Kaufmann inhabits this cycle more fully, but it will be interesting to hear that happen.

Terminamos el ciclo:

The Spectator, Sep 6, 2003
Michael Tanner

Kaufmann took us with him on his journey, left us in no doubt where he was heading, and stood tormented before us. It was one of the greatest interpretations of the cycle I have ever witnessed, ranking with – to mention only the greatest – Hotter and Fassbaender, and tending to the latter’s eviscerating mode. Nothing in his progression was easy, and his last note, held for ages, was almost a scream. After the piano had its final chord, there was an immense silence, Kaufmann looking as if he could hardly believe what he had just put himself and us through; and then huge applause, with an element of relief that the ordeal was over.

Talking of Wunderlich brings us back to an area in which his recorded legacy is probably richest: Lieder. I ask if Kaufmann too has plans for recording Lieder with Decca. 'Yes, we definitely want Lieder, that's something we agree on and we already have cycles and things in mind. I thought it would be much easier because it's just with my pianist, but I still need to have the time. It will take a while, but we have three or four albums in mind and we plan over the next three or four years to record several Lied albums. So it's not over with the recording of Lieder now that I've signed with Decca. Actually, that was not only my idea, it's not as if I forced them or convinced them to agree to it - they had the same feeling too.'

I ask there are any cycles in particular, but Kaufmann's answer studiously avoids any definite statements. 'There are some that can wait even if I've sung them often. An example is Winterreise, which is something I've been performing, not excessively like some. I mean, I always have the comparison with Herman Prey, whom my pianist Helmut Deutsch worked with for several years. He would do one recital tour in just Germany with 36 recitals, one day after another performing only Winterreise, so you can imagine how many of those he sang! I've done maybe ten or twelve now, but it's something that still can grow and the older you get, the more experienced, not only vocally but in terms of life-experience. For instance, with Die Schöne Müllerin you have to be young because the guy's really innocent: vocally younger and more flexible, more light, less sadness. In Winterreise the story's over and you start suffering from the first song, whereas in Müllerin the first half is positive before it starts going down. I think this must be a young man because he's much more naïve, and falls into this trap as a result. We tried to divide them into what's really essential to do now and what can be done in five or six years, and this is a cycle that needs to be recorded earlier rather than later.'

Last year his disc of Richard Strauss songs won a Gramophone Award and he is keen to explore more of this territory. “Strauss in particular fascinates me,” he says, “Early on, I had some lessons with Hans Hotter, who knew Strauss well and would show me not only how Strauss wanted something to go but the kind of character he was. He told me about how Strauss would have screaming rows with his wife that would last for hours and then Strauss would sit down and write the most amazing love song. Out of this terribly difficult moment would emerge something of incredible beauty. It has a great effect on the way you perform these songs after hearing that.”

Richard Strauss notoriously disliked tenors, once even going to far as to call them "a disease". You can't help feeling, however, that he might have changed his mind had he heard this tremendous disc, which features Jonas Kaufmann tackling 27 of his songs. Stupendous is the only word to describe it. (5 stars) - The Guardian

It takes everything that is dear,

Oh, I fear the night will also steal

Traum durch die Dämmerung - Dreaming through the twilight

- James Leonard, All Music Guide

Angiolina, ando ocupado estos días y tampoco he podido recrearme mucho escuchando a tu Jonas

Gracias

die Gaben karg, die sie verleihn;
für einen deiner Blicke gerne
hin geb' ich ihren goldnen Schein.

Getrennt, so daß wir ewig darben,
nur führen sie im Jahreslauf
den Herbst mit seinen Ährengarben,
des Frühlings Blütenpracht herauf;

doch deine Augen, oh, der Segen
des ganzen Jahres quillt überreich
aus ihnen stets als milder Regen,
die Blüte und Frucht zugleich.
The heavenly stars are fair but cold,
the gifts that they lend meager;
for one look from you I would gladly
give up their golden gleam.

So that we are always starved, only separately
do they bring out in the course of a year
autumn with its ears of corn
and spring with its splendour of blossoms;

yet from your eyes - oh, the blessing
of the entire year springs richly,
as constant as a mild rain:
with both blossom and fruit.

Hoffen und wieder verzagen - Hoping and despairing again

[flash 335,28]http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=11524487-81e[/flash]

Hoffen und wieder verzagen,
harrend lauschen an ihrem Balkon,
ob nicht, vom Winde getragen,
zu mir dringe von ihr ein Ton,
also reihn seit Monden schon
Tage sich mir zu Tagen.

Spät, wenn stumm und stummer
Nacht sich lagert im öden Revier,
senken zu kurzem Schlummer
sich ermüdet die Wimpern mir;
wieder empor aus Träumen von ihr
fahr' ich zu neuem Kummer.

Aber, o Himmel, ich flehe:
raube mir nicht mein teuerstes Gut,
dies beglückende Wehe,
das ich genährt mit des Herzens Blut;
hoch und höher laß lodern die Glut,
drin ich selig vergehe.
Hoping and despairing again,
listening impatiently at her balcony,
in case the wind carries
to me the sound of her voice -
thus for a month already
the days have passed for me.

Late, when mutely and more mutely
night rests in this bleak area,
into a brief slumber droop
my exhausted eyelids;
they open again from dreams of her
and I go onward with new anguish.

But, O Heaven, I pray:
do not rob me of my dearest possession,
this happy woe
which I have nourished with the blood of my heart;
high and higher let the flames blaze,
so that I may die blissfully in them.

Mein Herz ist stumm, mein Herz ist kalt - My heart is dumb, my heart is cold

[flash 335,28]http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=11524488-b79[/flash]

Mein Herz ist stumm, mein Herz ist kalt,
erstarrt in des Winters Eise;
bisweilen in seiner Tiefe nur wallt
und zittert und regt sich's leise.

Dann ist's, als ob ein mildes Tau'n
die Decke des Frostes breche;

tönt ferner, immer ferner her,
und wieder erstarrt liegt alles.
My heart is dumb, my heart is cold,
frozen in the winter's ice;
sometimes, but only in its depths, it seethes,
trembles, and stirs quietly.

Then it is as if a gentle dew
has melted through the cover of frost;
through green woods and blooming meadows
the brook murmurs anew.

And the sound of horns, carried from leaf to leaf
by the spring wind,
echoes from the gulches faintly in my ears,
like a shout from happier days.

Yet the aging heart will grow young no more;
the echo of a dying sound
fades into the distance
and once again everything lies frozen.

Mein Herz ist stumm, mein Herz ist kalt!!!!
Después de todo lo que he corregido.... Siempre deprimente.

18.- Trockne Blumen

[flash 335,28]http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=11524764-8b8[/flash]

Ihr Blümlein alle,
Die sie mir gab,
Euch soll man legen
Mit mir ins Grab.

Wie seht ihr alle
Mich an so weh,
Als ob ihr wüßtet,
Wie mir gescheh?

Ihr Blümlein alle,
Wie welk, wie blaß?
Ihr Blümlein alle,
Wovon so naß?

Ach, Tränen machen
Nicht maiengrün,
Machen tote Liebe
Nicht wieder blühn.

Und Lenz wird kommen,
Und Winter wird gehn,
Und Blümlein werden
Im Grase stehn.

Und Blümlein liegen
In meinem Grab,
Die Blümlein alle,
Die sie mir gab.

Und wenn sie wandelt
Am Hügel vorbei
Und denkt im Herzen:
Der meint' es treu!

Dann, Blümlein alle,
Heraus, heraus!
¿Cómo me miráis todas tan tristes,

¡Entonces florecillas todas, salid, salid!
¡Mayo ha venido, el invierno se fue!

19.- Der Müller und der Bach

[flash 335,28]http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=11524765-9ea[/flash]

Der Müller:
Wo ein treues Herze
In Liebe vergeht,
Da welken die Lilien
Auf jedem Beet;

Da muß in die Wolken
Der Vollmond gehn,
Damit seine Tränen
Die Menschen nicht sehn;

Da halten die Englein
Die Augen sich zu
Und schluchzen und singen
Die Seele [zu]1 Ruh'.

Der Bach:
Und wenn sich die Liebe
Dem Schmerz entringt,
Ein Sternlein, ein neues,
Am Himmel erblinkt;

Da springen drei Rosen,
[Halb rot, halb weiß]2,
Die welken nicht wieder,
Aus Dornenreis.

Und die Engelein schneiden
Die Flügel sich ab
Und gehn alle Morgen
Zur Erde [hinab]3.

Der Müller:

Ach Bächlein, liebes Bächlein,
Du meinst es so gut:
Ach Bächlein, aber weißt du,
Wie Liebe tut?

Ach unten, da unten
Die kühle Ruh!
Ach Bächlein, liebes Bächlein,
So singe nur zu.
El molinero:
Donde un fiel corazón muere de amor
ahí se marchitan las lilas en cada arriate;
para que no vean sus lágrimas los hombres;

nacen tres rosas, medio rojas y medio blancas,
entre las ramas de espinas, que ya no se marchitarán;

Ah, arroyuelo, querido arroyuelo, tu intención es tan buena;
Ah arroyuelo, querido arroyuelo, sigue cantando.

20.- Des Baches Wiegenlied

[flash 335,28]http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=11524766-b96[/flash]

Gute Ruh, gute Ruh!

Will betten dich kühl
Auf weichem Pfühl
In dem blauen kristallenen Kämmerlein.
Heran, heran,
Was wiegen kann,

Hinweg, hinweg
Von dem Mühlensteg,
Hinweg, hinweg,
Böses [Mägdlein]1!
Daß ihn dein Schatten nicht weckt!
Wirf mir herein
Dein Tüchlein fein,
Daß ich die Augen ihm halte bedeckt!

Gute Nacht, gute Nacht!
¡Buen descanso, buen descanso!
¡Cierra los ojos!
Caminante cansado, estás en casa.
La fidelidad está aquí,
debes yacer conmigo,

silbaré y zumbaré a tu alrededor.
¡No miréis aquí
azules florecillas!

malvada muchacha,
para que tu sombra no le despierte.
Échame tu fino
pañuelito
para que los ojos le tape.

¡Buenas noches, buenas noches!

[flash 425,350]http://www.divshare.com/flash/video2?myId=11514560-5b5[/flash]

Der Jüngling an der Quelle

Leise rieselnder Quell!
Ihr wallenden flispernden Pappeln!
Euer Schlummergeräusch
Wecket die Liebe nur auf.

Linderung sucht' ich bei euch
Und sie zu vergessen, die Spröde.
Ach, und Blätter und Bach
Seufzen, [Luise]1, Dir nach!
Softly, trickling spring!
Ye churning, rustling poplars!
The sounds of slumber you make
Will only awaken my love.

Balm was I seeking from you
And to forget her indifference.
Ah, the brook and each tree
Sigh for my loved one, for thee.

Die Forelle

In einem Bächlein helle,
Da schoß in froher Eil
Die [launige]1 Forelle
Vorüber wie ein Pfeil.
Ich stand an dem Gestade
Und sah in süßer Ruh
Des muntern [Fisches]2 Bade
Im klaren Bächlein zu.

Ein Fischer mit der Rute
Wohl an dem Ufer stand,
Und sah's mit kaltem Blute,
Wie sich das Fischlein wand.
So lang dem Wasser Helle,
So dacht ich, nicht gebricht,
So fängt er die Forelle
Mit seiner Angel nicht.

Doch [plötzlich]3 ward dem Diebe
Die Zeit zu lang. Er macht
Das Bächlein tückisch trübe,
Und eh ich es gedacht,
So zuckte seine Rute,
Das Fischlein zappelt dran,
[Und ich mit regem Blute
Sah die Betrogene an.]4
En un claro arroyuelo,
Se precipita alegremente
La trucha juguetona,
Que pasa como una flecha.
Yo estaba en la orilla
Y en un dulce sosiego
Vi el baño del alegre pececito
En el claro arroyuelo.

Un pescador con su caña
Se colocó en la orilla,
Y miró a sangre fría,
