Lyric's 'Rosenkavalier' evokes shouts of approval

… the great shout of approval that went up … at the end of the … first Rosenkavalier Saturday night ... Every aspect … — singing, conducting, orchestral playing, stage direction, design — was superbly integrated and executed at the highest international level. ..Anne Schwanewilms as the Marschallin and Camilla Tilling as Sophie were both making Lyric debuts. Susan Graham sang her signature role of Octavian… With her svelte figure and Marlene Dietrich-esque beauty, the German soprano Schwanewilms not only looked the part but sounded it, radiantly so. She commanded a warm, creamy middle range and lustrous high notes that floated over Strauss' sumptuous orchestrations. A woman of immense dignity and grace, this Marschallin wore her wistfulness like a fine French perfume and was all the more touching because of the subtlety of her portrayal. Hard to believe this marked her role debut.

… Tilling's singing glinted with silvery highlights, blending beautifully with Graham's mezzo in the presentation of the silver rose and final duet. The young Swedish soprano played Sophie very much as a "spirited filly" … no finer Octavian in any theater today than Graham, who delivered the mezzo's music with typical beauty and firmness of sound, making the Marschallin's teenage paramour coltish and vulnerable. Never before has a Lyric production given Graham's impeccable comic timing such a free hand, and she proved absolutely hilarious in her disguise as the gawky chambermaid Mariandel, whom the baron also lusts after... Franz Hawlata delivered a definitive Ochs, a loutish and lecherous country squire who made the baron's crudity both credible and even charming.

Davis, Lyric's resident Strauss expert, shaped the score with a knowing and affectionate hand, while the orchestra performed minor miracles for him. (Deseo que podrían jugar en consonancia.)
