Rolando Villazón, whose struggle with health problems obliged him to cancel a series of major appearances this summer and fall, has withdrawn from all of his engagements at least through the end of 2007.

The Metropolitan Opera announced yesterday afternoon that, due to illness, the 35-year-old tenor will be unable to make his December appearances as Romeo (opposite Anna Netrebko, his frequent onstage partner) in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette; he had cancelled his September and October dates in the role last month. (The company announced another withdrawal from the seemingly ill-fated production only this morning.)

Just as the Met's statement went out, Carnegie Hall released the news that Villazón has, "with great regret," postponed his Carnegie Hall recital debut on December 10. A rescheduled date for the concert will be announced at a later time.

This morning the Royal Opera House in London confirmed that Villazón won't be appearing in the new production of Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore in November or in the company's fall gala concert on November 15. (No replacement has been announced, though tenor Stefano Secco, already scheduled to make his Covent Garden debut in the run's performances on November 19 and 24, could well be asked to fill in for his colleague.)

Alan Green, Villazón's manager, told The New York Times that the timing of the tenor's return to the stage is "difficult to pin down right now ... I would hazard to guess certainly early in the new year." Villazón's engagements for January 2008 include six performances at the Vienna State Opera, three each as Massenet's Werther and as Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon, as well as recitals at the Liceu in Barcelona and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. According to those venues' respective websites, he currently remains on the schedule for all of those performances.

Asked about the nature of Villazón's health problems, Green told the Times, "I can't say more than that. Health reasons, period."

Jonas Kaufmann, the German tenor whose combination of robust voice and sex appeal has created plenty of excitement at the Met, Covent Garden, Vienna, Munich and other major operatic centers, has pulled out of two major engagements this month due to illness.

The first was Los Angeles Opera's season-opening gala concert last Sunday, September 9, with company general director Plácido Domingo conducting Verdi's Requiem. Kaufmann withdrew on Tuesday of last week; L.A. Opera engaged Arturo Chacón-Cruz, a young tenor then in rehearsal at Domingo's other company, Washington National Opera, and flew him to California for the Requiem.

The second cancellation is for this week: Kaufmann had been scheduled to sing the title role in two performances of Verdi's Don Carlo at the Zurich Opera House, the company with which he works most often. There appears to be no announcement of Kaufmann's illness or withdrawal in the German or Swiss press or on the company's website, where his name on the cast list was quietly replaced early today with that of Fabio Armiliato.

A representative of Kaufmann's management agency in New York confirmed to PlaybillArts that the tenor is simply suffering from a very bad cold. He remains scheduled to take the tenor solos in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra to open Carnegie Hall's season in early October, and he still intends to return to Zurich for late October and November runs of Don Carlo and Königskinder by Engelbert Humperdinck, the composer of Hänsel und Gretel.


Me refería a las cancelaciones.

No sé si es verdad lo del resfriado. Sin embargo, dos o tres semanas sin actuaciones no me parecen tan largo rato, sobretodo si se considera que la Nona de Beethoven y Don Carlo no son nada fáciles y seguramente Kaufmann tendrá que aparecer por lo menos algunos días antes del concierto en Nueva York para partecipar en las últimas pruebas de la Nona.

Pues no me extraña lo de Villazon, porq ultimamente mas q cantar parecia q eructara... atentos al inicio del siguiente video, parece escatologico y todo:

Y es una pena, porq yo lo vi en el liceu como Nemorino y me parecio FA BU LO SO... pero este año lo he vuelto a ver como Des Grieux y...

Pues sí que está bruto Villazón, a su lado hasta da la parece que la Netrebko es buenísima...
