Manon Lescaut Mafalda Fav ero
Il cavaliere des Grieux Giuseppe di Stefano
Lescaut Mario Borriello
Il conte des Grieux Cesare Siepi

Antonio Guarnieri

Lyric Tenor of Metropolitan Again Impresses Audience, Singing Part in "Manon"

Massenet's "Manon" received its seventh and last performance of the season yesterday afternoon at the Metropolitan Opera House. Giuseppe Di Stefano, the company's new lyric tenor, who had not been heard since his recent successful debut as the Duke in "Rigoletto," was the Des Grieux of an otherwise familiar cast.

Mr. Di Stefano again impressed by the excellence of his voice, with its warm, concentrated tones, marked by pronounced beauty of timber. He looked the part of the 'handsome young aristocrat of Abbé Prevost's imagination and acted the role ably, investing his impersonation with refinement and fervor.

In the duet of the first act and the aria "Le Rêve," Mr. Di Stefano's singing was admirably clean. If the sounds in the lower register lacked something of the resonance and meatiness of the rest of the long scale, the entire voice, from top to bottom, was well pointed, pure and firm. "Le Rêve" was delivered with skilled use of mezza voce and finely produced pianissimo effects, without resorting to falsetto.

In this aria the tones were carefully colored, but when Mr. Di Stefano reached the "Ah, fuyez" in the St. Sulpice scene, he was less successful in this respect and here, for the first time, he pushed his tones and blemished a couple of them in a too Italianate sort of approach. Up to this time, however, all of his work had been of exceptional worth, vocally as well as from the interpretive point of view. And among the many merits of his performance was the ability to pronounce French in a thoroughly creditable manner.

The company, undoubtedly, has a real find in this youthful, modest artist, whose appearance in future will be watched with great interest. He aroused the large audience to a prolonged demonstration of approval after his account of the "Le Rêve," and it was fully justified.

Licia Albanese was once more entrusted with the title role in a cast also including Martial Singher as Lescaut, Jerome Hines as the elder Des Grieux, Alessio De Paolis as Guillot and George Cehanovsky as Du Bretigny. Wilfred Pelletier conducted.

ALBANESE SINGS MANON AT 'MET'

Di Stefano Takes the Role of Des Grieux in Massenet Opera - Fausto Cleva Conducts

It can be said that the performance of Massenet's "Manon" last night at the Metropolitan Opera House was in general livelier, with more energy and drive in it, than any previous "Manon" in our experience of this theatre. But it cannot be said that this was an interpretation either sensitively and affectingly communicative of the true natures of Massenet's adorable opera.

It was heavy-handed, maladroit and without the distinction of the French style. There was some care taken with diction, especially in the first act, which was the best achievement of the evening, and an ensemble, including the trio of light o'loves, which moved fast. But the farther it went, the more this presentation violated the quality of the opera and vulgarized it.

It may be urged that in this vast theatre, which is too large anyhow for "Manon" to make its full effect, a degree of multiplication of tone and gesture is necessary for the benefit of those in the galleries as well as those in the parquet. But no such explanation could possibly excuse, for example, Mr. Stefano's maltreatment of Des Grieux' music, sung in the worst sob and slur style. Add to this an impersonation totally without distinction of manner, which is most unfortunate for this elegant part.

We preferred also Miss Albanese's first act to anything that she did later. Her picture of the young girl, sensuous, amoral rather than immoral, burning for Paris, and Des Grieux for the asking, was that of an authoritative and perceptive artist. Her singing of "Vyons, Manon," and of the duet with Des Grieux, "Nous Vivrons á Paris," etc., started at first in artistic fashion.

We say naught of the Cours de Reine episode. But by the time of the convent scene it appeared that Miss Albanese, too, had succumbed to what seemed a veritable contagion of bad style and self-defeating exaggeration. There was no reason for Des Grieux to resist there in a moral struggle. He hadn't with her, except to out-shout her, which he did.

Mr. Singher, the swaggering Lescaut, was one of the two principals on the stage who showed a sense of proportion, and a sure knowledge of the how and the way of his part. The other was Mr. De Paolis, always intelligent, amusing, authoritative in a second role. It is true that he, with his sidekick, George Cehanovsky, the Bretigny, had to contend with the farcical effect of white-feathered headdresses. That gave them the look of a pair of disguised Indian chiefs participating in an aristocratic masquerade.

But Mr. Hines, the heavy father of Des Grieux, knew nothing at all of the characterization of his role, and was evidently uncomfortable in it. The stage direction was cluttered with nonessential detail. Mr. Cleva interpreted the score with energy, drive, with tempi that were prevailingly too fast, and with a heavy hand that reeked not of the subtleties and graces of Massenet's score, and sometimes overpowered the singers.

Lapidante.

Imagen

Werther (Italian)

Ciudad de México, Palacio de Bellas Artes (Ópera Nacional)
Maestro directore Renato Cellini
Werther Giuseppe di Stefano
Charlotte Giulietta Simionato
Sofia Eugenia Rocabruna
Alberto Fausto del Prado
El padre Ignacio Ruffino
Johann Gilberto Cerda
Schmidt Francesco Tortolero

 Dividerci dobbiam...Sogno! Incanto! Placer!
<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10349614-500" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>
<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10349615-2b5" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

Ahora, pasemos a escuchar al traicionado(?) Werther del segundo acto:

 Un altro ella sposó! (Un autre est son epoux)
<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10349616-733" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10349827-bdf" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=9705780-3d5" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

</center>

<center> WILHELM MEISTER

Citar:
Mr. Di Stefano possesses one of the most attractive tenor voices at the Metropolitan, though its volume is decidedly limited. In Mignon, however, the young artist was only half effective most of the time. He may never have sung the role of Wilhelm Meister before, and he almost certainly had not sung it in French. The second-act aria, "Adieu, Mignon," had scarcely more than occasional agreeable moments. By the time his third-act opportunity, "Elle ne croyait pas," came along, he was more sure of himself, and gave some indication of the caressing vocalization his audiences hope he may be able to achieve in another year or two. It will probably take him longer to learn to act, for he displayed hardly more than the barest rudiments of the craft.

Citar:
One of the Metropolitan's hidden assets came to light last night as Giuseppe di Stefano sang Wilhelm Meister in "Mignon" for the first time anywhere in French. Though this is a tantalizing part for a tenor, with the ever present prospect that he will burst into sustained song only occasionally fulfilled, di Stefano left but one question unanswered-why had he not sung it previously, especially in the broadcast'?

It was, altogether, a disarming piece of work, and in the "Addio" and "Romance," a thorough delight to hear. Di Stefano had himself much more in hand than at his few brilliant but uneven performances last season: moreover, he had his voice completely at his disposal, the pure open top, the warm resonant middle a vocal paradox in these days of tight, over-driven tenors. There were bravos for him both opportunely and inopportunely; plus the unspoken ones of a few for the virtues that were more than vocal -- his good bearing, good manners and good looks. If they continue to go together his future is assured.

Citar:
MR. DI STEFANO

The most exciting singing was done by Giuseppe di Stefano, one year older and several pounds more substantial than when he sang Des Grieux here last season within the first few months of his American arrival. At twenty-seven the young Italian tenor has not yet matured artistically, but he shows increasing volume and more expressiveness and definite gains in security and authority. Mr. Di Stefano is the most promising of the postwar tenors of his school with a voice of bright color, flexibility and easily soaring range. If pasta and antipasto don't get him, he is a romantically personable figure.

Imagen

Faust
Wilfrid Pelletier

Le docteur Faust Giuseppe di Stefano
Méphistophélès Italo Tajo
Marguerite Dorothy Kirsten
Valentin Leonard Warren
Siebel Inge Manski
Dame Marthe Schwertlein Claramae Turner
Wagner Denis Harbour

<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10308476-886" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10308474-554" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>
<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10308475-29c" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

 All'erte!
<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10308473-acd" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>

Citar:
This year the title role was sung by Giuseppe di Stefano, who has rejoined the Metropolitan roster. His voice has exceptional sweetness and beauty, but for the more dramatic accents of this assignment he lacks power and therefore often resorts to pushing, which does not enhance the quality of his singing.

<embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist?myId=10308715-914" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>
