Harold Fraser-Simson (1872-1944) He was born in London. Educated at Charterhouse and King's College, Fraser-Simson was at first involved in the world of commercial shipping, successfully operating, from an office in Mincing Lane, as a ship-owner. His first appearance in the musical theatre was with the score for the colourful, if old-fashioned, comic opera Bonita, for which he organized a West End production, directed by no less a luminary than Granville Barker, in 1911. Bonita lasted only 42 performances, but its music was sufficiently well received for its composer to be offered, five years later, the opportunity of composing the score for Robert Evett's Daly's Theatre musical, The Maid of the Mountains.

The enormous success of this show, and of his individual songs ('Farewell', 'Love Will Find a Way', 'Husbands and Wives'), set Fraser-Simson firmly in place as one of the most touted show composers of the time, and he subsequently supplied the scores for Even for two other vehicles for Maid of the Mountains star Jose Collins, A Southern Maid and Our Peg. The first of these followed The Maid of the Mountains into Daly's and had another remark-able success; the second, frozen out of Evett's London theatre by the long-running success of the other two, played only in the provinces and was later adapted into Our Nell (the original heroine, Peg Woffington, being replaced by Nell Gwynne for presumably commercial reasons) and played at the Gaiety.

The touring musical Missy Jo, a vehicle for comic W H Berry called Head Over Heels, and the remade Our Nell had only limited lives, but Fraser-Simson scored another fine success when he teamed again with Frederick Lonsdale on the romantic artists-in-Montmartre musical, The Street Singer, which ran nearly a year at the Lyric Theatre and toured widely thereafter.

The pretty Betty in Mayfair did prettily at the Adelphi the following year, but Fraser-Simson's most enduring work after The Maid of the Mountains was his last, a sprightly and lovable musical setting of Kenneth Grahame's Toad of Toad Hall as dramatized by A A Milne. This piece became a British Christmas annual and its success prompted the compilation in 1970 of a Winnie the Pooh, put together from Milne's book and Fraser-Simson's settings of the Pooh lyrics as the song-cycle The Hums of Pooh ('Christopher Robin is Saying His Prayers', 'They're Changing Guard at Buckingham Palace'). Winnie the Pooh also proved, for many years, a regular festive season favourite.

Antonio (Maria Gasparo Gioacchino) Sacchini (1730-1786) He was born in Florence, but was raised in Naples. He attended the Naples Conservatorio S. Maria di Loreto and studied with Durante; there he became mastricello (1756), maestro di cappella straordinario (1758), and secondo maestro (1761). In 1761 his first opera seria, Andromaca, was performed at the Teatro S. Carlo. In Venice (1762-63) he composed his operas Alessandro Severo and Alessandro nell'Indie. Following his success with Olimpiade (Padua, 1763) and with other operas in Rome, Naples, and Florence, he abandoned his conservatory post. In Rome (1765-68) he composed comic operas for the Teatro Valle. In 1768 he moved to Venice and became director of the Conservatorio dell'Ospedaletto, where his singing pupils included Nancy Storace. He moved to London in 1772, enjoying success with Il Cid and Tamerlano (both 1773).

When his licentious life-style led to legal difficulty in 1781, he left England for Paris, where he was already well known. There he won the favor of Marie Antoinette and composed for the Opéra. With the failure of his first opera, Renaud (1783), the initial support given to him by the Piccinnists quickly disappeared, and a rivalry with Piccinni followed. His next opera, Chimène (1783), secured for Sacchini a large royal pension. The delay until 1787 of the premiere of his most successful opera, Oedipe à Colone (1785), was a major disappointment to him; the opera remained part of the standard repertory until 1830. His last opera, Arvire et Evelina, completed by Rey, the conductor of the Opéra orchestra in 1788, was performed in Paris until 1827. In addition to over forty operas, Sacchini wrote oratorios, numerous sacred vocal pieces, and a small amount of chamber music.

Manfred Gurlitt (1890-1972) Gurlitt was born in Berlin. From 1908 to 1910, he was a coach at the Berlin Court Opera, and then acted as musical assistant to Karl Muck at Bayreuth. In 1911-1912, he was second conductor in Essen, then in Augsburg for two years. In 1914 he was given the post of first conductor at the Bremen Stadttheater, a job he held until 1924 when he was made their general music director. In 1920 he founded a Society for New Music in Bremen to encourage avant-garde and rarely heard pre-classical works. His opera Wozzeck (1926), after the play by Georg Büchner, appeared four months after the opera of the same title by Alban Berg and has remained in its shadow. Nevertheless its premiere in Bremen on 22 April 1926 attracted much attention at the time and marked the zenith of Gurlitt's career. Malicious gossip, claiming 'debauchery and loose living', caused him to move to Berlin in 1927 where he taught at the Charlottenburg Musikhochschule, and conducted for the Staatsoper, Krolloper, Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater and Berlin Radio.

Gurlitt's music was banned by the Nazis when they assumed power, but his presence in Berlin was tolerated as he undertook to bring his music in line with the aesthetics of the Third Reich. Gurlitt was then a member of the Nazi party from May 1, 1933 until being ejected from the party by court order on May 3, 1937. The court declared (falsely as it turned out) that Gurlitt had Jewish ancestry. In order to avoid being arrested by the Gestapo, he emigrated to Japan in 1939 where he became active as an opera conductor with Fujiwara Yoshie's company, the Fujiwara Opera, and, in 1940, became Musical Director of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. In these positions he presented the Japanese premieres of many works from the standard repertoire by Mozart, Wagner and Richard Strauss. Gurlitt's attitude to the Nazi regime remained equivocal, and he was a regular guest at the German Embassy in Tokyo. In 1953 he founded his own Gurlitt Opera Company in Tokyo, and in 1969 he became a professor at the Showa College of Music.

In 1955 he returned to Germany for a tour conducting his own works, but it was not a success - his idiom was judged passé. The following year he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross of the German Federal Republic's order of merit, but he ceased to compose and never returned to live in Germany, bitter at the neglect of his music in post-war Germany. He died, aged 82, in Tokyo. He also wrote Die Soldaten (1930) after the 1776 play by Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz and Nana (written 1933, premiere in Dortmund in 1958) after the novel by Émile Zola. In the former he anticipated the operatic treatment of the same Lenz play by Bernd Alois Zimmermann (premiere 1965), while in Nana he was taking on a subject similar to the exactly contemporary Lulu by Berg (also written 1933, but not premiered till 1937).

Pietro Generali (1773-1832) Generali was born in Masserano. His surname was Mercandetti until his father changed it when, bankrupt, the family moved to Rome. There Generali studied counterpoint with Giovanni Masi, interrupted by four months spent at the Conservatorio di S Pietro a Majella at Naples. He graduated from the Congregazione di S Cecilia in Rome and began his career as a composer of sacred music, producing his first opera only in 1800 (Gli amanti ridicoli). His first great success was Pamela nubile, composed for Venice in 1804 and repeated in Vienna in 1805. This was followed by other comic operas and farces which were widely performed in Italy and abroad (Le lagrime d’una vedova, Adelina, La Cecchina, La vedova delirante, Chi non risica non rosica, La contessa di Colle Erboso). He did not attempt opere serie until 1812 with Attila, but thereafter produced a considerable number; one of the most successful was I baccanali di Roma (1816), which was in demand for many years. In spring 1817, when his popularity began to be obscured by Rossini’s successes, he went to Barcelona as director of the opera company at the Teatro de la S Cruz. He held the position for about three years, often travelling in Italy and abroad, and contributed one original work (Gusmano de Valhor, 1817) and some revivals. From late 1820 to 1823 he was in Naples, composing several operas and teaching; Luigi Ricci was among his pupils.

With the Naples period his activity as an opera composer came virtually to an end. In 1823 he became music director of the Teatro Carolino in Palermo. In spring 1825 he was replaced by Donizetti; he returned to his post the following season, but in 1826 he was charged with being maestro venerabile of a masonic lodge and expelled from the kingdom. In poor health and disappointed by the cold reception of his works, he returned to the north of Italy and in 1827 became maestro di cappella at Novara Cathedral, a position he held until his death. In his last years he had a few opere serie performed, without much success.

Generali composed at least 55 operas as well as sacred works and cantatas. Contemporaries had conflicting opinions of his work. His early comic operas sounded ‘moderne’ and even ‘stravaganti’ in their vigorous and brilliant orchestration and a certain unusual harmonic richness. But at the end of his career, like many composers of the same generation, he appeared a pale imitator of Rossini. In 1828 Tommaso Locatelli wrote of Francesca da Rimini: ‘There prevails a certain carelessness, a certain triviality of style, as if the maestro had been working almost per otium’ (Gazzetta di Venezia). In fact, in spite of their fine melodic qualities and effective delineation of character, his works sometimes lack substance and structural coherence and do not always escape a certain stylistic standardization, partly the result of completing many operas during rehearsals. His use of dramatic orchestral effects (including the crescendo) anticipates Rossini, but the attribution to Generali of the invention of the orchestral crescendo, as stated on his commemorative tablet in Novara and repeated by Pacini in his memoirs, would seem to be an exaggeration.

Edward Joseph Collins (1886-1951) Collins was born in Joliet, Illinois into an Irish family – his father was from County Meath and his mother from Belfast. From age 14, he studied with Rudolf Ganz in Chicago, and in 1906 went with Ganz to Berlin, where he studied performance and composition at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik under Max Bruch and Engelbert Humperdinck. Upon graduation, he had a successful concert piano debut in Berlin. He returned to the United States in 1912 and toured with the contralto Ernestine Schumann-Heink. He was an assistant conductor with the Century Opera Company in New York City and with the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. During World War I, Collins served in the U.S. Army as an interpreter and entertained the troops as pianist. After the war he returned to Chicago and joined the faculty of Chicago Musical College. He later joined the faculty of the American Conservatory of Music. Collins belonged to a group of conservative Chicago composers whose influence did not reach far beyond the city. His music includes twelve major orchestral works (incl. three piano concertos), a secular cantata, an opera, several chamber works, more than 20 songs and a dozen piano solo and duo scores. For a number of years he was preoccupied with his Irish heritage and wrote several long scores for large orchestra involving traditional Irish melodies.

Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016) He was born in Helsinki. At the age of seventeen Rautavaara began studying the piano and later went on to study musicology at Helsinki University and composition at the Sibelius Academy. From 1951-53 he was a pupil of Aarre Merikanto receiving his diploma in composition in 1957. In 1955 the Koussewitzky Foundation awarded Jean Sibelius a scholarship in honour of his 90th birthday to enable a young Finnish composer of his choice to study in the United States. Sibelius selected Rautavaara who spent two years studying with Vincent Persichetti at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and also took part in the summer courses at Tanglewood given by Roger Sessions and Aaron Copland. In 1957 Rautavaara continued his studies with Wladimir Vogel in Ascona, Switzerland and a year later with Rudolf Petzold in Cologne. Rautavaara has taught and lectured at the Sibelius Academy as the professor of composition. Since 1988 he has made his living as a composer in Helsinki.

Rautavaara's earliest works revealed close ties to tradition but also his desire to renew it. They were followed by an extreme constructivist and avant-garde phase (as in the serially organized Fourth symphony "Arabescata", 1962) after which Rautavaara turned to hyper-romanticism and finally mysticism. Since the early 1980s, Rautavaara has adopted a sort of post-modern musical language in which modern and traditional elements of varying degrees of constructivism or freedom are combined with one another.

Rautavaara has composed eight symphonies, the most frequently performed of them being The Angel of Light, his seventh symphony. Symphony No. 8, The Journey was premiered in April 2000 by The Philadelphia Orchestra under Wolfgang Sawallisch. Other important groups of works include concertos for different solo instruments, among them the three piano concertos, the popular Violin Concerto (1977), the Harp Concerto (2000) and the Clarinet Concerto (2001-02). Rautavaara has also written a large body of chamber music as well as choral and vocal works including All-Night Vigil for a cappella chorus. One of Rautavaara's most popular works is Cantus arcticus, concerto for birds and orchestra, in which the straightforward orchestral part is juxtaposed with the sounds of birds recorded by the composer himself. Rautavaara's latest orchestral works include Manhattan Trilogy (2004), Book of Visions (2005), Before the Icons (2005) and A Tapestry of Life (2007).

Apart form his symphonies and concertos, the central pillars of Rautavaara's extensive oeuvre are his operas. With Vincent (1985-1987) and The House of the Sun (1990) Rautavaara has scored a notable international success. Aleksis Kivi (1995-1996) was premiered at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 1997 and it has been performed in Cosenza, Italy and Minneapolis, U.S.A since then. The latest stage work is Rasputin (2001-2003), an opera about the life of mystic and healer Grigory Rasputin.
