The Metropolitan Opera's singers, orchestra, dancers, and staff set off for a three-week tour of Japan today.
The tour features Renée Fleming, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Anna Netrebko, René Pape, Deborah Voigt, and Plácido Domingo, among other soloists, and includes productions of Verdi's La traviata, Mozart's Don Giovanni, and Wagner's Die Walküre, as well as a performance by the MET Orchestra.
Performances begin on June 10, with a Franco Zeffirelli production of La traviata conducted by Patrick Summers and featuring Fleming, Hvorostovsky, and Ramón Vargas. Marthe Keller's production of Don Giovanni follows on June 11, with Netreko, Pape, Jonathan Lememi, Magdelena Kozená, Matthew Polenzani, and Erwin Schrott. Andrew Davis conducts.
On June 12, Christoph Eschenbach leads a performance of Die Walküre in Nagoya, with Voigt, Domingo, Pape, James Morris, Deborah Polaski, and Yvonne Naef; the production is by Otto Schenk.
Between June 13 and June 24, the company gives performances of all three productions in Tokyo's NHK Hall and Bunka Kaikan Theatre. On June 19, the MET Orchestra presents a program of Tchaikovsky, Berg, Wagner, and Strauss at Suntory Hall. Eschenbach conducts; Fleming is the soloist.
The tour is the Met's sixth of Japan, and its first since 2001.
