Copenhagen Opera Mounts New `Ring' as Modern Danish Family Saga.

Bech Holten's ``Ring'' cycle, begun in the old house with ``Das Rheingold'' and ``Die Walkure'' and continued in the new with ``Siegfried'' and ``Gotterdammerung,'' has played a role in changing opera's image for the next generation.
He tells the ``Ring'' as a Danish family saga, set in the 20th century and seen from a feminist perspective.
``It is almost old-fashioned in that it really tries to tell the story,'' he says. ``We really try to put people of flesh and blood on the stage, and not to over-intellectualize the piece. It is a family saga, in the style of Nordic literature or the `Godfather' films.
``To make a good family saga you need to be able to see time passing,'' hew says. ``We chose to make it a portrait of the most fascinating, dynamic and terrible century in mankind's history. `Das Rheingold' takes place in the 20s, when the big ideologies are taking shape. `Die Walkure' is set in the 50s, in a Cold War climate. ``Siegfried'' is in 1968, when the young hero comes and breaks his father's rules. And `Gotterdammerung' is at the end of the century in the Balkans, when the ideologies come crashing down.
Brunnhilde's Survival
``At the end, Brunnhilde sets fire to Valhalla,'' he says. ``But we let her survive. It is time to put an end to the operatic tradition of slaughtering all these dangerous and interesting women -- Tosca, Carmen, Violetta.''

In summer of 1999, rehearsals for an outdoor performance of extracts from Wagner's ``Lohengrin'' had grave consequences. The performance venue was adjacent to the Copenhagen zoo, and the music caused a rare African opaki, a mammal related to the giraffe, to die of shock.
