Injury Will Sideline Metropolitan Opera's Director for Weeks

James Levine, the music director of the Metropolitan Opera, needs shoulder surgery and has been forced to pull out of the rest of the season, the Met said yesterday, a sharp blow that sent it scrambling for replacements.

Mr. Levine, who also leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra, fell onstage at Symphony Hall in Boston on March 1 and tore the rotator cuff of his right shoulder. He is expected to have surgery to repair it on March 20. That is the opening night of a run of "Fidelio" at the Met that he was supposed to conduct.

The loss of Mr. Levine for the remaining 10 weeks of the Met's season, as he recuperates, is a major setback for the house, where he was scheduled to lead a slew of performances through mid-May. They include six nights of "Fidelio," nine of a new production of "Don Pasquale," six of "Lohengrin" and three of "Parsifal."

The Met's incoming general manager, Peter Gelb, has already announced future Met debuts of Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Might they be willing to pop in a little early? . . . David Robertson of the St. Louis Symphony ably took over some of Mr. Levine's Boston concerts last week . . . Andrew Litton has guested with the Met in the past . . . Christian Thielemann, who will lead the new version of Wagner's "Ring" cycle at Bayreuth this summer, would be a good pick for "Lohengrin and "Die Walkure" . . . the Met's principal guest conductor, Valery Gergiev would be in a good position to conduct the Wagner operas. . . Jesus Lopez-Cobos . . . could tapped for "Don Pasquale."

Maurizio Benini ... is taking over the Met's new production of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" from Levine.

Por supuesto, le deseo una pronta recuperación a Levine Mientras tanto, parece que ya han encontrado directores sustitutos para el Fidelio (Paul Nadler) y el Don Pasquale (Maurizio Benini) http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/pop/1403AP_Music_Levine_Replacement.html Aún falta saber quién o quieres dirigirán el Lohengrin y el Parsifal.

¡Anda! Pues unos amigos de otro foro viajan a New York estos días y tienen entradas ya para el MET. A mi es que francamente, Levine es de los pocos directores operísticos que me gustan hoy en día, junto a Pappano, Muti y pocos más... De los sustitutos, a Nadler no lo recuerdo, pero Benini hará -imagino- un buen Don Pasquale.
