The pianist Alfred Brendel, below, concluded his 60-year performing career with a concert on Thursday night at the Musikverein in Vienna, Agence France-Presse reported. Mr. Brendel, 77, announced his retirement in November 2007 before starting a tour; he played his last concerts in New York at Carnegie Hall in February. The program of his final concert, performed with the Vienna Philharmonic, consisted of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9, known as the “Jeunehomme,” followed by encores of Bach’s “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland” and a piece from Liszt’s “Années de Pèlerinage.” Audience members included two former chancellors of Austria, Alfred Gusenbauer and Wolfgang Schüssel. In an interview with Gramophone magazine, Mr. Brendel said he had chosen the Mozart concerto because it is “a perfect work, with that special freshness of something done for the first time and succeeding at the same time.”
